Pintor, escritor y profesor estadounidense. Recibió una beca de arte a los 11 años de edad, pero obtuvo títulos de Stanford y Harvard antes de decidir convertirse en un pintor formal. Desde el inicio de su carrera adoptó el expresionismo abstracto, y sus escritos eruditos fueron en gran medida responsables del tono intelectual del movimiento. En su serie de pinturas Elegías españolas, iniciada en 1948 y continuada durante tres décadas, desarrolló un repertorio limitado de formas negras, serenas y simples, que se aplicaban al plano pictórico, creando una sensación de movimiento lento y solemne. Aunque trabajó en diversos estilos, su fama radica en su trabajo pionero como fundador y principal exponente del expresionismo abstracto.
